John and Henry quickly jumped up to comfort Bobby upon hearing him begin to cry and Ruth went to sit next to Bobby. “Oh you poor sweet boy” Ruth said emotionally as she brushed his cheek with her hand and looked into those blue eyes awash with tears, akin to an ocean. “I’m so glad you are finally home with us where you belong” she added. “Mrs. Ravencroft..I” Bobby started to say but again the emotion stopped him, “My days of Mrs. Ravencroft are behind me, please call me grandma” Ruth said with a smile. “I know Bill is sick he couldn’t be here with you, but he wants to call you later” she added. “How did they feed you?” she further added, “Not great” Bobby replied softly. “I’ll fix us something” Ruth said, “I never thought I’d get to..see you..or taste your cooking again” Bobby said as he tried to fight the tears. “It always was the best Mr..grandma” he added with a forced smile, “You just rest up, you’re home now” Ruth said and kissed Bobby on the cheek before she left for the kitchen. “Cheryl this isn’t how I wanted us to meet again” Bobby said emotionally as he looked to Cheryl, “No matter the circumstances it is great to see you again Bobby” Cheryl said. “I guess we need to talk” Bobby said, “We will but later, you take care of yourself and these two for now” Cheryl said with a smile as she ruffled John and Henry’s hair. “I think they are taking care of me” Bobby said with a chuckle, “I’m sure they will if you let them” Katherine said warmly. Ruth returned with sandwiches for everyone shortly after and they all ate while the boys told Bobby about themselves, how they met and their experiences so far. He listened intently as they talked, it brought him some manner of comfort to know that while he could not be there for Henry, he could see that John had been. A part of him was grateful, a part of him saddened that he had not been able to be a part of it, he found himself awash in all manner of emotions, but to see Henry’s face bright and smiling as he interacted with John told him above all else he was happy and that was Bobby’s greatest wish for his boy. Though four years of being in Henry’s life was robbed from him, he was determined to be there for the remainder, and to keep his promise to Katherine to love Henry, which was the easiest promise he had ever made. He was broken from his thoughts by loud voices that rang out from downstairs, “Brudders?!” Hudson called out as he ran up the stairs, “Hudson come here” Roy said sternly as he followed the boy up the stairs with the other children behind him. “I gots to see brudders” Hudson said as he reached the top floor and saw John and Henry with Bobby. “Brudders!” he added as he ran to them and jumped in the bed, “Who dis?” he further added as he looked upon Bobby. “Hudson this is my uncle Bobby” Henry replied softly, “Oh” Hudson said. “Hudson I asked you too wait downstairs” Roy said as he appeared with Charlie in his arms. “Mr..Roy” Bobby said emotionally when he saw them and began to cry again, “Why he crying?” Hudson asked. “Don’t cry uncle Bobby” he added as he climbed on to Bobby, “Come here cutie, is Mr. Roy fussing at you?” Ruth asked as she pulled Hudson into her lap and hugged him tightly. “I want to hear all about your trip to the zoo” she added, “We saw wots of animals” Hudson said. “How are you doing son?” Roy asked as he looked down upon Bobby, “Who is this poppa?” Charlie asked. “Is that..he looks..” Bobby stammered emotionally as he looked at Charlie, “Is Michelle here?” he added. “How do you know mommy’s name?” Charlie asked, “I didn’t want to do this today but maybe it’s time for us to talk” Roy said emotionally. “Do you feel like walking downstairs with me?” he added, “I can” Bobby replied. “Henry I hate to take him away from you but I’ll have him back shortly” Roy said, “There’s something we need to discuss” he added. “I’ll be back soon Henry” Bobby said as he began to follow behind Roy, while Christine along with the rest of the kids climbed into the bed to all be together. Roy led them down to the lounge where he had Bobby sit upon the sofa, “I would like you to hold him for this” Roy said, “Oh.sure” Bobby said and Roy placed Charlie in his lap. “This is Charlie, as you have already guessed he is Michelle’s son” Roy said softly as he sat next to them. “How do you know my mommy’s name? Did you know her?” Charlie asked as he looked up to Bobby, “I don’t know what to say” Bobby said as he looked to Roy. “Just tell him the truth son” Roy said, “Charlie I love your mommy very much” Bobby said. “You love my mommy?” Charlie asked, “Very much so” Bobby replied. “I love mommy too” Charlie said, “Where is she?” Bobby asked, “Mommy’s in heaven” Charlie replied sadly. Bobby’s face took on a look of shock which Roy saw, “Son I don’t know how to tell you this but we lost her to cancer, I’m so sorry” Roy said emotionally. “But she lives on in Charlie” he added, “I have mommy’s ring” Charlie said as he pulled the high school ring necklace from his shirt. “Charlie..I loved your mom…so much” Bobby said as he began to cry and held Charlie to him, “Are you crying because you miss mommy? I…miss her..too” Charlie said as he joined in and began to cry. Roy comforted them both as he fought to not cry himself, “Charlie Bobby was your mom’s high school sweetheart, they were very much in love, and he is the one that gave your mom the Camaro” Roy said. “You..gave mommy..her car?” Charlie asked through snivels as he continued to cry, “Yes” Bobby replied. “Bobby Charlie is Michelle’s only child, and she loved him endlessly, I know she is looking down and seeing you holding him with a smile on her face” he added. “I know it would mean a great deal to her.. and to me.. if you could love him” he further added as the emotion he fought so hard to keep at bay came forth and be began to cry along with them. “Of course..I’ll love him” Bobby said as he fought to talk through the emotion, and all three held on to each other as they cried out their grief over the loss of Michelle. One life that had meant so much to all of them, One life taken from them far too soon.
